This year’s annual business meeting will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, January 20th. Because of the COVID-19 restrictions this year, the meeting will be held over Zoom instead of over dinner (although you are welcome to eat dinner during the meeting!). Alan Lasneski will send an email with the Zoom links and instructions as we get closer to the meeting date, so watch your emails.
During the meeting, we’ll have a chance to meet the many new members that joined this year, provide overall updates on the club and our financials, discuss what we’ve accomplished over the last year, vote on proposed changes to the Bylaws, hold officer elections, discuss plans for the future, and discuss other business that you wish to bring up.
The Vice-President and Secretary Officer positions expire in January, so elections will be held for these positions. If you have interest in serving on the Board, please contact any of the board members for more information on these positions: Isaac Mosgrove (President), Simon Hayes (Vice-President), Joan Johnson (Treasurer), Alan Lasneski (Secretary), or Al Gray (Safety and Maintenance).
If you know of special topics, proposals, or concerns that you’d like to discuss, please contact Isaac so that we can be sure that they are on the agenda.
We look forward to recapping the accomplishments of this past year and to look ahead to further improvements for the future.

We had to cancel our December flyout because of poor weather. For January, we’ll aim to fly on the 9th and if that doesn’t work out, we’ll try for the 23rd instead.

Updated plan for the 23rd: Sisters (weather/snow permitting) or the coast.

Quarterly club meetings are held with the Board in order to provide members more opportunities to ask questions, make suggestions, raise concerns, and have increased visibility into the status and workings of the club. The quarterly meetings will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of the 2nd month each quarter at 7:00 PM in the hangars if possible or online if not.

It looks like the fresh local strawberries should be ready about mid-month, so we have tentatively planned our annual Strawberry Shortcake and BBQ event for Saturday, June 19th. Bring your choice of meat for your family and a salad or main dish to share in the potluck. The club will provide beverages and strawberry shortcake for all. The event will start at 12:00pm, with the grilling starting at 1:00pm. Bring the family and friends to enjoy an afternoon at the hangars! We’ll also be inviting the tower so we can get a chance to visit with some of our controllers. This event is BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair). Although not required, please RSVP to Isaac Mosgrove so that we make sure to have enough beverages and strawberry shortcake. Keep an eye on your emails in case the schedule changes!

On Saturday July 24th, we’ll make the one hour and 25-minute fight to Boeing Field (KBFI) to visit the Museum of Flight. The museum is home to a vast variety of aircraft and space exhibits. We’ll depart Salem at 8:00 am in order to make it for the 10:00 am museum opening. There are 4-5 aircraft parking spots available at the museum so if we arrive early we should be able to park at the museum. We’ll plan to eat lunch at the museum’s café or stop on the way back at KTIW or KCLS for a bite to eat

    10:00 amKSLE-KORS

The first full weekend in August, the Orcas Island EAA chapter hosts the annual fly-in and antique car show. In past years there have been 50-100 airplanes parked for camping during the fly-in. The quaint town of Orcas is a short walk from the airport for dining and shopping. During the fly-in, the fire station next to the airport hosts a pancake fund raiser so that covers your breakfast part of the day. For those camping, it's best to stake out a spot early so we’ll depart late Friday morning August 6th. On Saturday we’ll also plan to make the hop over to Friday Harbor or Roche Harbor for some lunch or dinner. If you aren’t a camper feel free book a local B&B or fly-up early Saturday or Sunday morning for the day. If the San Juan Islands are on your flying destination bucket list, now is your opportunity to join in on the fun.

The Reno Air Races are back! We did a club fly out in 2019 to KRNO so let’s do it again. We’re planning on departing Tuesday September 14th early in the morning and attending the races the next day (15th) which is the first practice/qualifying day and is typically less crowded. We’ll return on Friday the 17th which lets you take in a second air race day on the 16th or use that day to relax in Reno. As of now there are only two hotels on the race shuttle route (Eldorado and Nugget) and both are competitive in price. If you are time constrained or want to get there on your own, Alaska was quoting $180-$238 from PDX (as of 7/5/2021).

    11:00 amKSLE-KEUG

Saturday October 30th, we’ll be visiting the Oregon Air and Space Museum which is located on the airport at KEUG. If you haven’t landed at KEUG before, this is great time to experience a somewhat larger and busier airport which has more complicated taxi routes than does KSLE. The museum, though small, has some interesting exhibits and the $7 admission goes to help the curators maintain some aviation and space artifacts for the enjoyment of non-aviation folks. The museum doesn’t open until 12:00, so we’ll plan to depart KSLE at 11:15.

Haven’t flown at night in a while? Want to get some additional night experience or regain your night passenger currency? Join us Saturday night, November 20th, for some night takeoffs and landings. We’ll have several club instructors on hand to fly with up to two pilots in the 172’s for some night dual. The tentative plan is to fly to a nearby destination (e.g. KMMV, S12, etc.) and get three landings, then switch pilots and fly to another airport for three landings.

Sunset for the 20th is at 16:35 so an hour after that we’ll launch after a short night safety briefing. Plan to arrive at 16:30 to pre-flight while it’s still light outside. Afterwards for those interested, we’ll go to the Flight Deck restaurant for flying talk and food. The instructor cost will be $25 per pilot and each pilot is responsible for paying for their aircraft time (estimated .5 hour). Please RSVP to Todd Lindley (via Flight Circle) by November 13th as space is limited.

The last time we had a club fly out to Sun River was April 2020. That was Spring so what a better time to go on a sunny winter day (hopefully) with snow on the pass and surrounding the airport. On Saturday December 11, we’ll depart at 10:00 am for S21 and from the airport take the resort shuttle to the Sun River Resort to grab lunch at one of the resort restaurants.

After canceling last year’s Christmas party because of COVID, we are looking forward to getting together with everyone to celebrate this year. Joan and Vern have graciously agreed to host the party, starting at 6:00 PM on Saturday, December 11th. In order to have enough food for everyone, each member is asked to bring either a main dish or salad, and a small dessert to share. The club will provide meat and some fixings. We’ll also do a gift exchange, so bring a fun gift in the $10-15 range (aviation gifts are always fun). Bring your family or friends and masks for a fun evening together. This is a great time to see old friends and to meet some of our newer members. Please RSVP to Isaac by December 4th so that we can get the plans finalized and seating appropriately spaced. Feel free to text or email Isaac or Joan if you have questions.
